Ingrid :: 3

Ingrid turned 3 back in May. In comparison, Ingrid was a much easier 2-year old than Syd was, but that had a lot to do with Sydney dedicating her second year to not pooping. Ingrid wasn’t prone to tantrums, was relatively content watching other children or pestering her sister.  They also play well together so I can’t really complain to much when they argue over a project or toy. I often would find Syd in Ingrid’s crib playing with her in the mornings; always melted my heart.

Potty training was *relatively* simple for Ingrid although the processes was a bit forced against us by day-care which both she and I resisted.  They started transitioning her into panties back in March, but Ingrid wanted nothing to do with it here at home so I usually just let her wear diapers when she wanted to because I didn’t want to deal with a screaming child over something I didn’t think she was ready for anyways. It all worked out for us in the end, just took longer than it did with Sydney. In the end she was potty trained by the time she turned 3 and accidents are few and far between (but happened way more than they did with Syd!).

UntitledIngrid is a sweet funny little thing.  Full of silly smiles and coyness. I don’t feel like we have the mental battles I did with Sydney, but maybe I’m still distracted by the mental battles Sydney keeps throwing at me to much mind noticing those from Ingrid. Untitled

Ingrid isn’t much of a talker. She has definitely taken to words slower than Sydney and her peers.  One of her friends at school can talk circles compared to Ingrid. I would blame it on having an older sibbling who is around to do all the talking for her but her comparator classmate has an equally (if not more) verbose older brother the same age as Syd.

Ingrid is definitely known by her silly hair. She got her mom’s curly fro that is usually a rats nest each morning and typically looks that way throughout the day.  It fits her personality though so I hope it never changes! Untitled

Its funny, Syd’s 3-year post was all about her favorite color and how we were working on letters and phonics. I can confidently say I have no idea what Ingrid’s favorite color is because she either never voiced such a strong opinion or has been fickle about the concept.  We haven’t sat down and gone over letters with her once that I can recall. I never got far with Sydney on the concept so I leave the education to school and try to fill her days in with play and reading.  Oh how your time-priorities change when you have two kids to focus on instead of one!

In addition to a joint day-care party with one of her close friends, we had a quiet birthday party here at home among our neighborhood friends per tradition.  We had a Doc McStuffin’s themed cup-cake cake from the bakery and Ingrid seemed less than impressed with the cake and our signing apparently.

Ingrid had her 3-year well visit on May 19th.  Since her 2-year visit she gained 6.6 pounds and weighs in at 32 lbs (64%).  She grew 2.5 inches, and is now 37.25 inches tall (45%).  No head measurements are done at the 3-year visit but I can assure you Ingrid’s head is plenty big!  Some of it may be the hair though. For the most part Ingrid is a tank compared to Syd at 3 (who was the same height but weighed only 28 lbs).  Poor Ingrid is built like her mama from her head to her bones!  I wonder if that is why the pediatrician calculated her BMI for us…16.2 (65%)…

Ingrid still seems so much more of a baby to me than Syd did at 3 and I don’t know why…I’m in no hurry for it to change much though since she will always be my baby!

Some updated pictures

Oh dear…this poor neglected space. Please do find solace in the fact that I’m not neglecting other things as well. I’m just busy juggling life, work, mom, wife and self.

The summer is now behind us and we are moving towards fall, albeit slowly thanks to mother nature who still is lost in summer.

I started a new temporary job on Monday and I was culling through photos to see if I had any updated pictures of the girls to take with me to my temporary new office. I realized that it has been a while since I got good photos of them…so last weekend while we were outside grilling up supper I brought out my Nikon to get some updated photos of the girls.

We didn’t spend a lot of time. I didn’t change their outfits or comb their hair (I did make effort to wipe Ingrids face which seems to be constantly presented with a runny nose).

Nothing fancy, nothing planed, nothing posed. Just two silly girls. Growing.

Ingrid talking :: 4

each day Ingrid gets more and more words and starts stringing them together to form thoughts or (most often) demands.

“moh pee-h” (more peach)

“mo  rye” (more rice)

“mie ie-keh-kay”  (my ice-cream-cake)

She is still pretty apprehensive about talking and mumbles strings of nonsensical sounds in an attempt to appear that she is ‘talking’.

Her use of made-up words for things like “eee-oh” for help and “Ni-Ni” for Sydney are starting to dissipate. She can now say “help mama” even though I respond with “do you need eee-oh?”.  Each day I miss those mis-spoken words like “lar-lee” instead of Charlie.

Anytime she is in the car its Ingrid as a solo artist serenading us with her very lively (and loud) version of Baa Baa Black Sheep which she knows about 30% of the words and the rest she makes up. She also likes to rattle off her ABC’s (again gets about 25% of the letters right) and Twinkle Twinkle.  She sings more than I remember Syd singing and often takes her toy piano and drops it on my lap and demands I sing something.  She does have decent tone though and can carry a tune pretty well so I’m holding out that she will be my musical one.

Ingrid is TWO

Darling Ranges

We had Ingrid’s birthday party at the house on Sunday. A few friends and some hot dogs on the grill and some cake. The weather was perfection so we brought out the bounce house and the kids kept pretty entertained.

For a Mother’s Day Sunday it wasn’t the most relaxing of days for me (will it ever be?) but it was worth it to be surrounded by such awesome friends to celebrate Ingrid.

It wasn’t the best of days for poor Ingy, she was rather cranky (frankly I was too so I can’t blame her), but she pulled it off.

Although her reaction to her cake was quite surprising to me because she typically loves cake…and cookie Monster.

As in past years I’m trying to make the girls a dress for the birthday (in addition to the ones I make throughout the rest of the year). I cut this Ice Cream Dress out along with another for Syd this past winter, but never sewed it up. After an hour on Friday afternoon and two hours on Saturday morning it was finished though…just in time for Sunday! Thankfully I am familiar with the construction of this pattern so it went together quickly even with all the detailed finishing touches which make Oliver & S patterns so sweet.

The fabric was from my stash and was given to me by my friend Katie. Its an old line from Oliver and S; Modern Workshop. I think the blue really complemented her sad little blue eyes nicely.  There are more photos up on Flickr — click that good-looking family below to go see some more!

I know what is coming

And I’m not looking forward to it.

The past few days with Ingrid have been brutal. Foreshadowing, I’m certain of her ‘twos’ which are quickly approaching.

Typically Ingrid is a very happy, polite, agreeable child but the past few days she has been set off over little things.

wanting her cereal
….not wanting her cereal
wanting her toothbrush
….not wanting her toothbrush
throwing cereal
….throwing toothbrush

She is irrational, temperamental, moody, defiant, LOUD.

I feel like I’m walking on eggshells near a ticking time bomb afraid to ask the wrong question or do the wrong thing.

Of course this comes as Royce is about to jet off for a few days with his friends.

pray for me people.

pray to whatever higher being you believe in (or just to the toddler-Gods) that Ingrid isn’t as bad as Sydney was the other time Royce went on his spring break trip.

At least this time I was smart enough to book a sanity-sitter for Saturday and am taking the entire workday off on Monday.  Live and learn.

Ingrid talking :: 2

Ingrid has moved on to the mimic phase of language development and she will at least try to say a word if you ask her to. Just the other day I asked her to say granola when she asked for some cereal and it honestly came out sounding like a very deliberate (but lengthy) “gra no luh a”.  Not bad indeed.

Right now I am only reinforcing words I would like her to learn. Simple things she often needs, like food and beverages. This AM we walked into the kitchen and she said “mama nahna” which I correctly interpreted as “Mama get me that banana!”. Juice, cheese and milk are also words she has down pretty well. She is still ever so polite with her dank-ooo’s that follow her requests.

Lately she has been using more of the two word sentences “mama boots”, “mama cup” (points to my wine glass), “mama shoe”, “daddy book” etc etc to describe things or ask for things.

Her singing has also started to string in nonsensical words when before it was just humming. Now we often hear all the words she can say in the tune of BaaBaa Black Sheep.

Ingrid talking :: 1

A few new words have popped up recently.

The most clear is apple which she says so slowly and deliberately it comes out more like “aahpuuhl”.

I also noticed she says thank you when you give her something. It’s hard to decipher because it sounds like “daanh dooouuu” (and is likely why its taken me this long to notice!) but it definitely has the correct intonation.

She has also been adding a real sing-songy ending to the “y” in Mommy and Daddy which is beyond ridiculously cute.

My snuggler

Ingrid is my snuggler.

On the weekend mornings we spend a lot of time on the floor and she just crawls over me. Sunggles in. Sucks her thumb.

She makes little happy sighs. You can’t rush her. If I get up and she isn’t done snuggling she will cry.

I sometimes feel like she is trying to absorb back into me. Even Syd gets in on the fun.

A big pile of girls in their PJ’s.
Lazy weekend mornings.
Slowly waking up with snuggles.

’12-month’ stats and an update

2013-06-27 07.10.23

check out my sassy yellow romper!

As keeping with the status-quo around here (which has been chaos). Royce and I completely spaced out on Ingrid’s 1-year well child visit and were no-shows for our appointment; whoops.  Figuring this is the first time this has ever happened I cut ourselves some slack.  We couldn’t get Ingrid in though til this week which is quite a bit after her 1st birthday but maybe it was our punishment for forgetting.

Since her 9-month visit she gained 3 + lbs  and now weighs in at 20 lbs (19%).  She grew two hole inches! and is now 30.5 inches tall (73%).  And her big ‘ol noggin grew by 1.5 cm (47.5 cm; 94%).  Since she hasn’t been so sick these past few months she has caught up with weight and now weighs similarly to what Syd did at 12-months but she is a whole inch and a half-taller than Syd was at a year.

She got her shots and passed all her other developmental milestone tests at her well-check.  Royce took her so I don’t have much more details to provide about the visit.

We recently had Royce’s friend Dain, and his wife Crystal come for a visit.  The intention was to get 1-year photos of Ingrid and some family shots too (some of the photos from one of our sessions are up on her blog).  It was fun to have such good friends around for a week.  Although I found out I’m officially to old to stay up til 1 AM at a concert.  It was fun to pretend to be young though.

night on the town — I’m actually sober in these photos…

Since we had some extra hands we also decided to take Syd to the Nationals game.  Her first time at National’s Stadium!  It was sweltering the day we went, so when we got home we all promptly changed into swim gear and headed to the pool to cool off.

Syd’s first Nationals game

Work has been crazy lately, and I do not see a light at the end of the tunnel.  I find myself dreaming often of just quitting and moving somewhere where we can live without my income, and I can do yoga all day, and sew, and pick up photography again…and not be stressed out.  Do to circumstances I get a feeling this may be a reality rather than a dream if the current pace of things keeps up.  I’ve got about $15k I need to get out of the federal government for student loan repayment and once I get that…my desire to stay will be much much less.

Saturday AM at work with Mama

Happy Birthday Ingrid!

We celebrated Ingrid’s first birthday here at home with few of our friends and their kids.  It was as relaxing as 8 adults and 10  kids can be.  We had great weather so the big kids enjoyed a bouncy house out front and the little kids enjoyed watching the big kids bounce.  Salad, veggies and pizza were served for supper and of course there was cake!  Ingrid loved her cake, she really dug down and got nice and messy;  just like a good first birthday girl should do.  Click on the messy baby below to see more of her first birthday party!
